“My advice is that you should start small, if you have a piano (or a piano kit), you should start your beginner lessons with violin, or with violin concertos. You just learn to play something on the violin and you get to know the techniques and the sounds. The more you do it, the better and more fun it is. One thing I always tell my students is that you don’t have to be able to play the whole violin until you are 18. The sooner you start, the better the chances you won’t have any regrets when you go and start playing. You can just keep practicing and trying your best and have a great time.”
Do you teach children? If so, how often and for how long?
“I do not teach children, although I would love to learn from them because I love a good challenge. I like to work on something for myself, which is why I play violin. There are many reasons I do the thing I do, and as long as I find something that interests me, I keep going. I am not on the market for any career yet or a new project.
“I am not going to change my practice habits. You can be a professional violin player today, but you can learn something, make a difference and enjoy life. There is a lot of good life on the violin!
“If you have some time on your hands and don’t mind spending a bit of it on the violin, then I would urge anyone, especially young children, to get into violin. If someone just thinks violin will only get them a paycheck or a ticket to a concert, I don’t think that is an excuse.”
Why is there such a gap between school-aged children and violin players?
“To teach children you have to take into consideration their age and maturity. The more the violin player becomes aware of his or her musical talent, the more he or she will want to learn it. But at the same time, everyone goes through this phase in their life. Parents are usually the ones to teach their children about instruments. If you know that when your child is a kid, he or she is quite active in the gym, play with his friends, he or she should start playing a violin by the time he/she is five. By that age, children can learn to play. There are some children who are not ready for the violin just yet, but that doesn’t mean they won’t eventually.
