That really depends on several factors, not least of which is lifestyle.

The reason why is due to a number of factors:

The body mass index (BMI)

You may not be aware of this, but if you’re an 18-25 year old woman you’re more than likely in that range. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a BMI greater than 25 is considered overweight and 30-39 is considered obese.

And as you’ve probably realised, the more you weigh, the more fat you’re going to carry around in your fat tissue, and this becomes a double-edged sword.

Not only does this put an undue strain on your heart, liver and gastrointestinal system, but it also makes you more susceptible to cardiovascular disease.

As a result, we should always aim to be in the BMI range of 18-25, and this can vary depending on your age, height, activity level, skin type and even your body fat percentage.

To work that out, you should keep your BMI, as well as waist and hip circumference and waist-to-hip ratio, from here on out as a guide.

What are good and bad belly dancers?

While we’ve established here that different types of belly dancing have different fitness merits, there is a general consensus that the majority of belly dancers are very unhealthy.

They may be overweight – it seems that women who dance in the bikinis tend to have even higher waist circumferences than those who dance the more curvy ones.

This has led to the suggestion that belly dancers are unfit, and while there are a number of reasons for this – such as a lack of exercise or being too scared to try new things – the majority of the time these people aren’t as healthy as their fellow fitness competitors.

You can check the results for yourself by downloading and running (in Chrome) the Bodyweight Calculator – for iOS and Android.

So what should you do?

What you can do from here is decide whether you’re going to continue on with what you’ve been doing, or if you’ll get serious about training/bikini fitness.

The benefits of bikinis, as previously mentioned, include the addition of cardio for health reasons and the potential to make you look more toned and toned.

If all you have is a bikino, then there is one option – try getting into a bikini.
