How many calories do you burn every day, based on average energy expenditure for a 40-year-old person? To keep it simple, I’m using a 400-calorie range on a body weight of 175 pounds, and using the average of all the other calories from all other sources you’d consume during a day to arrive at your daily average. The only information used to arrive at this was a few quick calculations including your current weight and body-fat percentage. This is not the only data you’ll need to get a good idea of your daily energy expenditure, but it’s a good starting point.
The results: If I don’t have to think about it too much, I’m in a great place with my energy use. I think the only time I need to use a calorie calculator is when weighing and measuring foods in restaurants, and that’s an activity most of my clients don’t do, so they don’t really need to know how many calories I’m burning or how fat I’m gaining. I don’t know that I am underweight (nor am I morbidly obese). So why do I need to know this? Because I think being under or overweight is a huge predictor of obesity and diabetes. If I know I’m in good shape, I can reduce the potential risk of developing disease and/or making it worse. If I know I’m not, it can be very informative.
How long after you stop eating should you weigh your next meal?
If I’m not going to be eating on a regular basis, I don’t have to worry about it. The fact that I know I’m not going to be eating every day means I don’t have to weigh it. I might get too fat and need to eat less and less.
How long do you usually consume protein and fat?
Since I’m still relatively lean, I eat a lot of it, because I’m not worried about it and it’s not as costly. One medium serving of chicken breast has 50 grams of protein and 50 grams of fat. A serving size of a whole egg will have 1 gram of protein and 0.6 gram of fat. A serving of a cup of nuts or a serving of whole grains will have 3 grams of protein and 8.2 gram of fat and will have about half as much fat.
