“It can be a challenge for people on diets because of the amount of calories they consume all day. If you’ve had a lot of calories in your diet then it’s hard for you to lose weight over the long term,” he said.
According to recent research published in the Annals of Internal Medicine it is possible that consuming moderate amounts of dietary fat reduces the body’s appetite and allows the brain to use fat for fuel to produce energy.
“It may be possible to build muscle on a fat-based diet,” said the study’s lead investigator, Dr Peter Gøtzsche, from Oslo University Hospital.
In a separate investigation the researchers discovered that, after following a low-calorie diet for three months, the subjects were less likely to have experienced depression, lower levels of anxiety and were less likely to have a heart palpitatory attack compared to men who had stayed the course on a high calorie diet. These positive results were achieved despite having high levels of consumption of carbohydrates, salt and sugar during the study.
The study also found that people following low-calorie diets had more muscle mass in the arms and legs and less fat mass in the biceps (the muscle at the front and back of the upper body) than obese people.
Although eating less food could mean more lean mass, the more muscular individuals did not have as strong a response to an exercise challenge, the study showed.

A large majority of Americans support the National Security Agency spying on foreigners, a new poll has found.
According to the latest poll published by The Wall Street Journal and CBSNews/New York Times, 75% of respondents said they would back the spy agency’s effort to gain intelligence from foreign intelligence agencies.
Sixty-nine percent of those polled felt it was acceptable for the NSA to use its surveillance powers to spy on foreigners in order to protect the country.
Seventy-eight percent thought the spying effort had benefited the nation, with 26% saying it was a hindrance.
Surprisingly, a majority (55%) disagreed that the NSA was collecting too much data from phone and Internet conversations.
According to the poll, 60% of respondents said they felt there was not enough oversight against the NSA’s spying programs, and 46% said their government was not doing enough to protect their privacy.
Another poll published by Gallup earlier this year found that a majority of Americans
