A randomized dose-response study using fruit juice in overweight men found that there was no difference in weight loss if people drank more, less, or both.
One clinical trial found that consuming 1–2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar daily was associated with a 0.8% loss of fat.
Another clinical trial showed that 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar daily was associated with a 7% decrease in body weight, and a 12% reduction in waist circumference. And a 1-week controlled clinical trial showed that a 6-ounce glass of apple juice with 4 tablespoons vinegar (about the amount that’s in most Apple Cider Vinegar) was associated with significantly lower risk of weight gain over time.
But there’s also been some evidence that even eating less (think olive oil and bananas) without fruit has been shown to reduce body weight. (For example, see this study of people over 60 who dropped their weight while eating fruit.)
So let’s get all scientific about this.
Does apple cider vinegar help with weight loss? Probably. But it’s not necessarily because eating apples helps you lose weight.
If you consume juice or a beverage with 5% apple cider vinegar (and you probably should!) you likely will not lose weight because the vinegar reduces calorie expenditure. That said, juice intake may have had the opposite effect.
The researchers who conducted this study included a population that consumed juice three times a day, whereas the juice drinkers in that study consumed less. If you add apples to your juice or drink it cold, you’re reducing calories.
But drinking apple juice has some drawbacks, including that drinking too much may lead to a low apple intake. So the researchers recommend that people who are trying to lose weight avoid it entirely.
In addition, some studies have shown that adding fruit into a fruit juice has a beneficial effect.
