It is the center, the central point, the goal, the root or root-of-all-virtues, the ultimate of all things. But to be a practitioner, to practice the Lotus is not something that one can do in one sitting. In the world, people who practice the Lotus do it for years on end. So why isn’t it the root, right from the start? Because the root of the teachings should be present for all beings. The Buddha’s heart is a heart of compassion, and the Heart Sutra says: “What compassion is, is not anything in the nature of the dharma.” The heart of the Dharmakaya is compassion. And the heart of the Lotus is compassion. And the heart of this Lotus is the greatest teacher, the heart of the Lotus. There is no other true teacher, there is no master, no master to learn, there is no master to learn from. The Buddha is everywhere.
So why then, I ask, isn’t that very same heart and heart-of-the-Lotus the teaching that one can obtain the ultimate of all things? Why don’t we just say, “There is compassion for everyone, there is compassion for all beings, and there is compassion for the Buddha”?
The Sutra of Enlightenment says, “The hearts of all living beings — they are not different from each other. So why do people have so many, so many eyes? Don’t they look at a tree and say, ‘This is a great tree, and this is a great tree’? Why have so many eyes, don’t they see their own bodies?” These are common-sense questions. But the real question is, “How did this sutra get so far into the past?” The Buddha says there is compassion for all beings, there is a great teacher, and there is compassion for the Buddha. All human beings, the entire world, even the Buddha, have compassion for each other. The way the Dharma came about is so that everyone can experience the root of the teachings, and everyone can cultivate the greatest teacher, the heart of the Lotus, and everyone can experience the essence of the dharma. It’s all so simple.
