Dancing has a whole lot of different meanings for different people, and I think for most people it means something very specific and special. I love the idea of it. I like the dance moves so much. They’re like little pieces that are really interesting. Like I could get involved with the group [I do ballet] and do a little dance in my free time.
Do you do all of the choreography yourself or do you work with a choreographer?
The choreography comes out of the choreographers, it’s not me. I think that’s interesting because I think what other people do and what I do isn’t that different. For me, I’m always looking for new things. That’s the biggest thing to me. I want this to be unique, it has to be different. I’m really, really into what I do. It would be really cool to have a different dancer do it so that it’s a different experience. It feels fun. I think that’s what I love about it. I feel it’s a very positive thing, it’s got different energy and it’s got that spark that you need for something to be really, really special.
And this has been around way longer than your first album, You’re Gonna Miss It All. But you’ve already made a couple other albums that took a different look at life.
I think this album is really about the future. The past is a thing that you can’t really see. To some degree, it’s an illusion and part of humanity that we see each other in a very narrow way, and that’s an illusion where you could call it reality. You won’t see the people you don’t really get to know or connect with that much. That’s where the future is. It’s in the past too where you can imagine the future and see things differently.
This record is really about that. It’s gonna hurt a lot. There’s so much pain in this music. And the next album is gonna take it to another level. That’s what I was trying to do with this album as well. I think a lot of people feel they’re never going to heal. The next album will really push and shake that frame for people.
So you haven’t thought about it too much?
No, but I’m always looking for new things. It’s weird to think about [writing this album] but it’s so nice to do something different again, to do something
