What is dance performance?

So let’s stop and have a short, informative talk about the difference between the way the media report dance (in this case, the way it’s presented in the press) and what dance is actually about. And then we can go on to talk about the different ways that dance has been portrayed from its birth in Greece (for instance) to the modern era in the US.
Now I’m not trying to be offensive. If the media was playing you a little music while you danced, it probably didn’t help. As much as I would love to be a cultural historian, I’d rather be a sociologist (which, by the way, is also why I am writing this essay) because I have to think about the things that are going on in people’s psyches.
So I would like to start out with a short, general, broad definition of dance , and then I’ll offer some generalizations about the roles and meanings of these roles, and how those things can influence the representations of dance in the media – because there are so many possibilities!
But let’s start here by talking about the fact that no one is actually singing like a human dancer. Sure, you can find some people who sing like dancers if you don’t look very hard. But you would generally find some people who sing like humans who aren’t dancers. They’d either sing in a different or even a different style of song. Which is a pity, because as soon as you start talking about human music, you’re in trouble.
So what is it about dance that allows us to say it’s an animal and not just a tool for a very narrow group of people to perform? It makes no sense. If it were just a useful thing people performed, then it could be considered a “speciality”, but it’s not. What makes dance the most “special” of all human musical practices?

Because it’s not about using human voices to imitate the sounds of another’s voice. Dance is a group performance – this is why, to me, it’s so fascinating. The performance in dance is very different from anything you’d see in any kind of media – and that is precisely why it’s often so controversial. Because it doesn’t follow rules and procedures.
It’s not even about a dance team. It’s actually very much about being in a group and having an experience together that makes you feel the same connection to the other dancers in the group. It’s the way that your body feels when you’re together with somebody
