A new study conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey shows how the Colorado River, which is the largest river in the United States, is being affected by climate change.
For every inch it has warmed in the past century, the Colorado River has gotten 40 percent less water, according to a study released Thursday.
“The warmer the water, the higher the flow, and the faster the flow gets,” USGS study author James O. Brown told the Monitor.
Brown, senior hydrologist with USGS, told the Monitor that the new study could lead to important changes to the river as the climate warms.
“In the future, we can expect even drier summers on the Colorado because there will be fewer evaporation and evaporative (water) heating at the river banks,” Brown continued.
The findings could also have implications in the coming years, according to Brown. As the climate continues to warm and as snowpack levels in the Colorado River basin are dropping, it is expected that some water will begin drying up in the rivers as the climate continues to expand.
To combat this, Brown said the federal government should begin work to reduce the amount of water that enters the river.
“In addition to taking steps to stop evaporation and evaporative cooling, this work should also focus on changes in water quality,” Brown said.
While the report shows the effects of climate change on the Colorado Basin, it also raises questions about the
