To be frank—we don’t know, actually. We may be able to deduce a few things.
(1) To get an accurate sense of dance manners, we need to see what’s happening when we dance. In the case of “couple dancing”, we see couples dancing across the floor toward each other without the dancers being separated as they share a dance partner.
There are two basic rules in dance:
No dancing together
Carrying a partner
The first is more obvious to some people and less obvious to others. Some people consider dancing with a partner to be a serious matter. Some people even consider it to be something that would bring serious social stigma. These people think it’s more important to be on a dance floor with a single person than dance in the crowd with strangers.
To some, dance is primarily a social thing, even though it’s not about relationships. And to others, it’s just a hobby. In fact, many people have the strange habit of going out of their way to avoid dancing and never returning.
In other words, the majority of Americans view dance as a form of pleasure, if not strictly a pleasure. (Perhaps because they have too much free time to spend on the actual dance?)
But I have to say that for most people, the concept of dance etiquette makes a lot of sense.
(2) If you’re planning on dancing, you don’t usually want to do two or three moves in quick succession in front of a lot of people in a short amount of time. If you are going to dance a lot, you need time to prepare and get your body set up. And for most people, that means waiting for the right time.
If you wait too long, people will have a better idea of your intentions than if you wait right now. You may be tempted to wait until the dance floor is full of others, or before the dance floor closes.
Of course, many people think it’s okay not to be on the dance floor when everyone else is. And, some people think it’s OK to dance in the crowd with strangers.
(3) If you know someone who just might be into dancing, make the most of your time together by spending time together before and after the dance. It’s a good idea to talk about what’s going on.
Ask them what they’re doing, and then ask them to tell you what they’re wearing
