Can you really call a style ‘social dance’?
Yes! Social dance, as I’ll call it, started out as a way of being more socially conscious in those days (as was ‘social’ and ‘dance’, they were a big part of the music of that time). But that evolved into something far more varied.
How can social dance have its most positive impact?
I don’t think that social dance is always a positive thing for you. This is why when I talk about dance and social justice, I don’t mean some ‘woke’ social thing, but a thing that is always constructive and respectful, and I think a lot of people who are more conscious of things like ‘dissent’ and social issues are good examples of that.
Can you sum up your music?
Yes! I always write ‘love and hope’ in my songs, which is just what I feel that I’m feeling at the time. I find it impossible to express myself in lyrics if I don’t feel like I’m going to be okay. And I think that’s probably one of my biggest strengths. I’m not trying to write about some social thing that is going to become relevant or become more ‘real’ and meaningful. No matter how ‘social’ or ‘dancey’ our ‘type’ of music is, we must make sure that it’s never about being more important than another.
That’s a very honest answer. There are a lot of people who would really like to see ‘dance music’ taken away from its social or ‘dancey’ identity. I disagree, because social dance is just about being better people.
What’s that phrase ‘be yourself and dance like anybody’ all about? How does that relate to you, and dance?
The ‘be yourself’ part came from the time in my childhood when I didn’t have any friends. I wanted to be someone I had never met, or felt comfortable with. This was around 4 years back when this song was written. I wanted to be the same person people had already looked up to as a kid and I wanted to be their self.
For many years I’ve been thinking about ‘being yourself’ and how it relates to dance because I’ve never seen anything like this. I’m not talking about some sort of ‘dance party.’ I’m talking about being a real, honest self like everyone else, even if it means not being the very best at something
