Is hip hop a social dance? – Origin And History Of Social Dance In Philippines

One way to think about the rise of hip hop is that people wanted something that was social and not just “cool.” People, especially in the 1980s, didn’t have a lot of options. You had the alternative rockers who were very focused on the party atmosphere and the clubs, and they were not so much interested in music in general.

It wasn’t an alternative culture.

Well, you know, if it was, it got the attention of the media, so people would start copying that; it became a way to make money. But then, as the music became more popular, the people who started hip hop became the celebrities of the music itself—you could do a movie called “Chinatown” and they would be in the soundtrack.

It all started to change, at a certain point.

What about all those songs that seem to be about the city?

They’re definitely very social songs—that’s the point. Because in my city, if you were a black kid you had to have a record deal. You had to have an education, you had to go to school, you had to be accepted, you had to go straight. I’m not making any excuses as to why you couldn’t have a good career, or whatever the case may have been, but in urban America, kids who didn’t have a good shot at a good life were really going to want to be social. They were gonna want to be part of something to get a sense of a community or to be part of something bigger.

But they also had to have fun—

That’s where it gets tricky. So when I was growing up in Philly, I never felt like I was part of a club scene, or part of a community scene like L.A.’s. It was just like a community that we were all part of. We were all young kids. We all went to school together, but when we got older we were all the same. It wasn’t until I moved away to New York and realized the city was different than what I’d experienced in Philly, that I started to feel like I was part of a group.

Do you know what’s happening in your hometown right now?

Yeah, we’re trying to get to know New York City, so if you want to come listen to our new album, check it out, because there’s some music on there that is New York City.
