Is there any other instrument that is so tricky to play and play well?”
“A lot of students start playing violin right then and there and then they forget the basics,” says Hilde Hessels, violin’s senior lecturer of music at the University of Kent. “For that reason, it’s often used as a bridge between music and computer programming.”
As a teacher of young violin players, she is keen to help them develop this talent.
“A lot of young violinists have not got their first lessons or are only starting, and that’s why they’re going to start playing instruments – to develop their knowledge and to keep learning,” she says.
The music industry can teach young musicians about a lot of stuff. But what you’re really interested in is making sure they know how to play the violin
“You need to play that instrument on the same instrument because it’s the same, because it’s similar to the piano that you’re going to play on. It’s a lot of work and skill to get used to and understand, but once they have that, they’re quite happy,” she adds.
For Hessels there are two important things he would recommend the next-generation of music students do: to find the right partner at such an early age and to learn how the instrument works.
“If violin is the hardest instrument then what else are you interested in?”
In the case of the violin, there are some things:
The sound: The sound, the music, the way it comes out and the way you’re going to feel when you listen to it.

How they respond to vibration and how they are used to vibrate the strings and so on. The position of the string: To how the wood feels (which is important because it has to feel a certain way to be right, whether it’s the kind that’s a bit curved and the way a violin bow feels), the tone and overall texture of the sound.
The wood used for the instrument: How it feels, feels like it has some texture to it and how you could play it if you had a real violin.
The best advice for violinists, according to Hessels is: ‘Always try to
