This comparison is just about the difference between a trumpet and a guitar. If you play the trumpet you’d have been playing the instrument 100 years ago than if you were playing the instrument today, and you wouldn’t have a difference in the sound of the instrument. That is the most important way to judge whether the instrument has been hard or soft over time.
The other difference is that a horn has a shorter sound than a standard trumpet. The trumpet has a sound in the middle of its range and a sound in the bottom of it’s range. A violin has a longer middle sound and a shorter bottom sound. A viola has a middle sound that starts closer to you, and a bottom sound that ends behind you.
Because of the difference between a trumpet and a violin, a violin can be considered a softer instrument than a trumpet.
“It is important to note that the violin and the trumpet were instruments that a great many people played during the 19th century. Many young people would play the violin for joy and never have to worry about the sound again.” Cello and Guitar.com
