Well… Yes and no. The difference is pretty small and I think the difference is mostly in the visual quality we are using. 4K is a bit better but with 4K video you can actually get to very smooth and well defined images.
The best frame rate on the Oculus Rift with my DK2 was 3840 x 2160 when watching a 1920×1080 4k video on a 50% brightness setting on an Intel i7 2700K with 4GB of RAM and a Samsung EVO 840 256 GB SSD.
If you play a lot of VR games, I think 3840 x 2160 in 4K is really good. Even something like Doom runs at an awesome 3840 x 2160 resolution. The difference you get from 3840 x 2160 is almost indistinguishable from 1080p if you ask me. This is why the 4K is important. With higher frame rate of course your PC will be a lot better at rendering it. To sum it up, if you want to get the best picture, get the 4K version.
4K vs 1080p: The good
I love the immersive experience you get with VR. The fact that you are floating around the room in a completely new world with incredible visuals and amazing 3D. The more I learned about the technology the more I loved to try it out. My only concern with video games is usually performance which leads me to agree with the statement we made above (which is very important). It used to be so easy to get frame rates up to 60 FPS with today games, but even then that was a lot about making sure your PC has enough RAM, hard drive and other power hungry devices on it, which didn’t leave room for the VR games to run smoothly. That was before the GTX 900 and GTX 970 became popular. Now, there is enough performance and video cards out there to make sure you can experience a really good experience with everything you want from the VR scene. You even have the option of purchasing some sort of VR headset if you prefer the 360 or similar and even some good ones.
I think the best and the most immersive setting for me on VR is 4k. I would go ahead and say that every single VR game that gives you really nice 4K visuals gives me more pleasure than any current 1080p game that I can find. In fact this is one of the reasons why the Rift is such a great gaming system. Even if I could experience 4K at 90 FPS then I have no idea how I
