Video editing is an artistic field – and while there are many different paths, there are some essential fundamentals that will make you a successful video editor.
The first one is to love what you do.
I can’t stress the importance of this enough. If you love what you do, you’ll be able to keep doing it. And, the reason why people keep doing what they do is because they love what they do.
For some, that means they want to work for some industry bigshot who is trying to make a career as a video editor – so they’ll find jobs as a video editor in that business.
On the other hand, there are also plenty of people who just love video editing. It’s the reason why you’ll often find a lot of successful video edit studios in the same cities.
The same thing applies to freelancers: You can work anywhere you want, but chances are, you’ll find a job for video editing somewhere around your current area of expertise.
As you can see – the way you go about creating great video is just as important as the way you go about doing what you’re in – and if you’re going to make an informed choice, you’ll have to choose wisely.
It’s really important that you know what you want to do first, and that you’re not just going to be told, “Well, you just want money. And I hope you’ll get it.”
You might even get that, but if you don’t know what you want to do, that’s a huge red flag to me!
So, take a moment and figure out what you want to do, then get to the bottom of which video editing jobs interest you most. There are lots of people out there that have the skills to do all of these jobs, and it’s really up to you to find the one that appeals to you. (Plus, you’ll find that a lot of these jobs involve working with a freelance editor too.)
Once you have a list of people who can edit video or video marketing materials, make sure you send your resume along with your pitch. You can use a professional service like Monster or CareerBliss to send all your resumes along with the job offer. These services will take care of the rest of the paperwork and allow you to get hired immediately! (Don’t worry, our service is FREE!)
