PASADENA, Calif. — NASA’s Opportunity Mars rover has spent more than six months investigating a location where NASA thinks it might find evidence of past microbial life.

The rover’s camera caught a faint spot during last year’s drill test, but Opportunity has now identified a rock formation that Opportunity may be able to visit and investigate. The scientists think this could mean a place where microbial life may have once existed, as well as evidence of a water supply at one time.

The discovery was made by the rover’s magnetometer on Aug. 27, 2014. The drill test was used to sample two sites during the test: one in Gale Crater on Mars and another in Meridiani Planum, another area where NASA has a rover.

“The magnetometer is not a ‘find anything, get it done’ test, but it’s very helpful to learn about rocks you can drive over,” says John Grotzinger, of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., and deputy principal investigator for the Opportunity science team. In the case of this rock, the rover’s magnetometer detected water — the same thing that would be produced in a geological context if organisms lived there.

“This shows it’s worth visiting that location,” Grotzinger says.

The findings were published online today (Sept. 12) in the journal Science.

The rover’s current location on the northern margin of Mars’ equator contains an area that is more hospitable than other areas for life on Mars. Mars has a lot of sulfur, a building block for sulfuric acid. There is also water.

“These rocks will tell you something about this environment more recently,” Grotzinger says. But Opportunity can’t
