“Rappers were originally for the street. Gangs for the streets. Rapping was meant to be spontaneous, and then some people just started giving it the gangster feel and saying that it’s all for the money and money and money. It’s not. You’re going to have someone else doing that before you in the same situation. They’re the ones who have the money and who are in the spotlight. They’re the ones that make the records.”
What does it feel like to be one of the people on the same team as that rapper?
“They are your peers and they’re like your peers. So you’re constantly with these people, and you love them or you don’t. There’s a lot of people I look up to and love, but I don’t love them because they’re like me. I always look up to people that have more than me, and it’s all for the love of music. If I can make music because of that, so be it. I have respect for people like Lil Wayne, but I don’t love him because of the money thing.”
Did you ever have a problem with what your fans thought?
“To be honest, I had more problems than some of these kids do. I had some friends that were upset, too. It would be an issue, but I guess for some people that’s the way it is. That’s just my reality. That’s the way I have to live my life, and you can’t really have a problem with that.”
Do you have the same problem with some of the younger kids that like you?
“Yeah, that’s probably part of it. I can’t complain or complain about what people like about me. They know what they like about me, and it doesn’t bother me. It’s something I enjoy because of the music and the people that I have around me. I’ll never go with someone that has a problem with me because that’s not what I am.”
Is it funny because you’re rapping and all these kids like you—
“Oh yeah, I remember that. I was just getting older. It was the same old feeling.”
Did you ever get the sense at one point that the music that you were rapping about was not the music for you and you weren’t doing your thing or you were going through the motions?
“Yeah, for sure. Because I was never a natural rapper. I was
