You’re not a magician or a con man,” says the narrator of one short film of my first taste of “Beware My Zinger,” a film about a young black woman’s attempts to run a restaurant on Detroit’s west side. It’s a great introduction to the black urban street food scene, and it’s a good movie too — one of the best I’ve watched that focuses on a few people and what they’re doing. The title sequence is brilliant, and that’s kind of the whole point of the whole project: to show that it’s possible for people of color and queer folks to put together a great restaurant and succeed on that level, despite all the barriers that it’s often put up against.
This project was so much of a surprise to me. I expected things to go on for a couple months, and then they do. But it’s not like I wanted it to go for a while. I just wanted to see how long it would last.
So if there are more episodes to come, do you know?
Oh yeah, I love having new material! I’ll make them later. This first one was actually just a warm-up. I was so excited to be starting a show, getting to know the collaborators, and learning more about the process of making a movie.
How long the next ones are?
I dunno. We’ll see. I’ve always had a feeling it would last forever — I knew it would be a long time before I did another one. I think it would be a good time to stop doing them. I’m also getting a small TV show in the future, but it’s not the kind of thing where it’s like, “Hey, we’re still making this thing.”
So no shows again?
Oh no. We’ll be back. We’ll be back as soon as I can get it out.
You have another short film, The New American Film, out right now. Why do you think that’s a good title for an issue that’s so specific to a particular time in American history?
I like the American Revolution stuff because that’s a time when things are changing. There was a time when it was the accepted way we thought of things. But now I like a lot of things that are happening across the globe: environmentalism, people working together to do something about it. That part of American history that’s fascinating to me, and I try to incorporate that as much as I can
