“Free energy” is energy generated by the use of technology or natural resources. Free energy is energy without price, just as it is the invisible stuff we get when we take a light bulb for a ride. Some energy is required to produce goods and services. It is usually the cost of the natural resources and technology that are required to use such resources and to produce them. For example, the cost of a light bulb is the amount of energy used (natural gas and the sunlight it transmits) to create the light. The cost of light transmission takes this energy and converts it into energy of a different sort: electricity. The cost of electricity is the cost of its production – in this case the electricity produced by burning coal. The cost of the coal (the coal used to make the coal) can be considered as a small fee to the owner of the coal that allows the coal to be converted into energy of some kind. This is called the “pricing” of the light bulb. The value of the coal used to make the coal is the price of the light.

The difference in the price of solar power vs oil could provide an advantage over coal in some circumstances, such as a more reliable source of energy for a city. The “free energy”, as the energy was originally known, is the most expensive energy. What is left over in the free energy is what has the highest energy value (energy for human beings) and is usually consumed as “free” energy. Because of its very low cost, free energy is very valuable but may be subject to price fluctuations (see below).

Some free energy can be considered more expensive than the other. Thus free energy may be more valuable in certain markets due to the difference in the cost of production of the different types of energy (light bulbs vs. oil).
