In an article published in the latest issue of Psychology of Women Quarterly, a study has found that the majority of women feel the stress of having to negotiate salary, a problem exacerbated by workplace sexism and lack of equality in pay.
The article, “Self-reported stress-related concerns among women in a representative Canadian sample of occupational physicians,” is the first long run study of anxiety-related experiences among full-time, full-year professionals in Canada.
“With respect to the prevalence of self-reported anxiety, both women in and men out of the professional sphere are affected,” study co-author Kristine De Voegeren, Ph.D., of the Department of Psychology at the University of British Columbia, said. “However, the extent to which women and women in the workplace perceive their own anxiety levels as significantly affected by these factors differ.”
De Voegeren and the study’s lead author, Jennifer Buss, Ph.D., of the University of Southern California, surveyed 1573 women, with an equal-number male and female, about anxiety levels, how they experienced salary negotiations, and their perceived stress related to negotiating. They also asked their perceptions of how other colleagues perceive the same problems:
1. More than half of women felt that their current salary level is “about the same” as that of their colleagues. Women’s perceptions are also similar to their male colleagues:
2. About half of women felt the stress of salary negotiations could affect their personal relationships. However, they are more likely to feel their anxiety impact the quality of their family life, work relationships, job satisfaction, and productivity.
